‘Wikipedia’ says ‘The tongue is a muscle on the floor of the mouth that manipulates food for chewing and swallowing (deglutition). It is the primary organ of taste, as much of the upper surface of the tongue is covered in papillae and taste buds. A secondary function of the tongue is speech. It is sensitive and kept moist by saliva, and is richly supplied with nerves and blood vessels to help it move. Lastly, the tongue also serves as a natural means of cleaning one's teeth”. Our tongue is a multifaceted organ.
Secondary function is to ‘speak’. Speaking is a Godly blessing. During the ministry of Jesus Christ, lot of dump people came and brought before HIM and he healed. Here we can understand that even the dump people all functions are performed except secondary. After healing, Jesus forbids them to speak not. But those who starts speaking due to excitement and overwhelming feelings spontaneously speak. Not only speak but speak abundantly. Even they may speak for hours or days continually. The average length of the tongue from the Oropharynx to the tip is 10 cm (4 in).
Sometimes we may satirically say ‘your tongue is extra long’. Once John Wesley was preaching, he noticed a lady in the audience who was known for her critical attitude. All through the service she sat and stared at his new tie. When the meeting ended, she came up to him and said sharply, “Mr. Wesley, the string on your tie is too much long. It’s an offence to me. He asked if any of the ladies present happened to have a pair of scissors in their purse. When the scissors were handed to him, he gave them to his critic and asked her to trim the streamers to her liking. After she clipped them off near the collar, he said “are you sure they’re right now?” “Yes that’s better” “then let me have those shears a moment” said Wesley. “I’m sure you wouldn’t mind if I also gave a bit of correction. I must tell you, madam that your tongue is an offence to me- it’s too long! Please stick it out… I’d like to take off”
‘Action speaks louder than words’ is a very familiar proverb. Arnold Glasow says an idea not coupled with action will never get any bigger than the brain cell it occupied. . What is the danger if our speech is bigger than the brain cell it occupied? Societies accept the person of eloquent speakers. Especially if you are a politician you must speak a lot. Promise is like a cloud, but our leaders are only clouds. People like clouds so democracy prevails.
Even though world likes eloquent speakers, but people did not believe them. Our ancestors never believed in ‘blab blab’ of the people. So they tried to teach their coming generations, now it becomes a proverb to us today. In every language in the world there is at least a saying about speaking too much and they not believed in too much speaking people. Let us see some sample.
‘Talk doesn't cook rice’. Chinese Proverb
Between saying and doing many a pair of shoes is worn out. ~Italian Proverb
A barking dog is often more useful than a sleeping lion. Bible
Action is eloquence. ~William Shakespeare
A promise is a cloud; fulfillment is rain. Arabian Proverb
Our world forbid too much speaking people, our society forbids, and in another way they like people with smiling face with exercised tongue!
Tongue is powerful than any other organ in our human anatomy.
In 1899 four reporters were unenviable task of finding scoop for the Sunday edition. They hoped to spot a visiting celebrity arriving that evening by train. As they discussed options in a nearby saloon All suggested they make up their own story. They laughed first and finally they all agreed they would come up with such a whopper that no one would question it and their respective editors would congratulate them on their find. They agreed on topic about China. “what if we say that some American engineers, on their way to China, told us they are binding on a major job: the Chinese Government is planning to demolish the Great Wall?”
By 11 P M the four reporters had worked out the details, and the next day all four Denver newspapers carried the story on the front page. The Times headline that Sunday read: “Great Chinese Wall Doomed! Peking Seek world Trade”
When the citizen of China heard that the Americans were sending a demolition crew to dismantle the Great Wall. They moved to action by new story, they attacked the foreign embassies in Peking and murdered hundreds of missionaries from abroad.
In the next two months twelve thousand troops from six countries working together, invade China to protect their countrymen. The bloodshed of that time, born out of a journalistic hoax fabricated in a saloon in Denver, was the time of violence known ever since as the Boxer Rebellion
The power of written or spoken word has beyond our human wisdom. Nations have risen and fallen to the tongue. Lives have been cast down by human speech. Goodness has flowed like a sweet river from our mouth, and so has the cesspool. The tiny tongue is mighty force indeed. *
When we analyzed war history of the world, 99 percent of the world’s war happened because of the bad exercise of tongue, consequences shedding of innocent blood. First murder in the human history was the result of lie. Let’s go out to the field (Gen. 4:8 NRSV & Net) and Cain’s dialogue with God starts with lie “I don’t know! Am I my brother’s guardian?” (Gen. 4:9)
Whether speaking or writing is a sin? No, Never, on the contrary it is a blessing!
But what is wrong. Intention decides right or wrong. Blurting! Gossip!
Story with creativity is needed than destruction. Whether we can say tongue is belligerent? Our ebullient and irrepressible character may lead to be belligerent.
Not many of you should become teachers, my brothers and sisters; because you know that we will be judged more strictly. For we all stumble in many ways. If someone does not stumble in what he says, he is a perfect individual, able to control the entire body as well. And if we put bits into the mouths of horses to get them to obey us, then we guide their entire bodies. Look at ships too: Though they are so large and driven by harsh winds, they are steered by a tiny rudder wherever the pilot’s inclination directs. So too the tongue is a small part of the body, yet it has great pretensions. Think how small a flame sets a huge forest ablaze. And the tongue is a fire! The tongue represents the world of wrongdoing among the parts of our bodies. It pollutes the entire body and sets fire to the course of human existence – and is set on fire by hell. (James. 3: 1-6) James the brother of Lord under stood this than any other man in the history. He well warned against the tiny organ in the human anatomy. He was warning not to the unbeliever but to believers. Not simply believers, but to Church especially to Jews scattered among gentiles. Tiny tongue- never under estimates it.
What the greatest wisdom ever in the world says. Tongue is negative only to second function. No never. What the Solomon says. The teaching of the righteous is a fountain of life, but the speech of the wicked conceals violence. (Prov. 10:11) The tongue of the righteous is as choice silver: The heart of the wicked is little worth. (Prov. 10:20 ASV) The teaching of the righteous feeds many, but fools die for lack of wisdom. (Prov. 10:21)
The speech of the righteous bears the fruit of wisdom, but the one who speaks perversion will be destroyed. The lips of the righteous know what is pleasing, but the speech of the wicked is perverse. (Prov: 10: 31-32)
A gentle response turns away anger, but a harsh word stirs up wrath (Prov. 15:1)
He not only says the positive side, but he warns against the tongue with the God’s wisdom.
When words abound, transgression is inevitable, but the one who restrains his words is wise. (Prov. 10:19) It wants against speaking too much, when you have abundance of word it is impossible to avoid sinning in an abundance of words.
A talebearer revealeth secrets: but he that is of a faithful sprit concealeth the matter. (Pro. 11:13 KJV) Gossip betrays the confidence, the godly man keep away from gossip; enquire about the pros and corns of the thing. The greatest mistake ever finding in the midst of godly people is ‘gossip’ when one person add a little bit to the facts and it will spread like an epidemic. Addition to the facts will go like geometric progression. It will cause the disunity of church, between members, between shepherd and sheep, elders and members, and even between churches. Consequences will be splitting of churches.
When the Pharisees heard about Jesus healed the blind and mute they said “He does not cast out demons except by the power of Beelzebul, the ruler of demons!” He realized them and said “Every kingdom divided against itself is destroyed, and no town or house divided against itself will stand. So if Satan casts out Satan, he is divided against himself. How then will his kingdom stand? (Matt. 12: 22-26) We the children of God are doing ‘Satan -dares to do.
‘Eloquent speech is not becoming for a fool; how much less are lies for a ruler! (Prov. 17:7)
Then the question arises who is a Godly man? The Godly man is like a moon. Moon can’t do anything its own. Moon do not has its own light but reflects the light of the sun. Jesus said ‘I am the light’. The author of forth gospel wraps it up the third chapter in nut shell to the testimony of John the Baptist about Jesus. ‘The one who comes from above is superior to all. The one who is from the earth belongs to the earth and speaks about earthly things. The one who comes from heaven is superior to all. He testifies about what he has seen and heard, but no one accepts his testimony. (Jh. 3:31-32)
The worldly man speaks, speaks too much, makes blab.. blab., too many shoes will worn out, shows the clouds, makes gossip, blurting, makes disunity and divide, because he speak from his own. Once someone said John Wesley “my talent is to speak my mind” He replied “that’s one talent God wouldn’t care a bit if you buried!”
You people are from your father the devil, and you want to do what your father desires. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not uphold the truth, because there is no truth in him. Whenever he lies, he speaks according to his own nature, because he is a liar and the father of lies. (Jn. 8:44) Godly children doing the work of devil and more than the devil does or He cannot do! ‘Fool rushes where the angles fears’. The first dialogue portraits in the Bible is a backbite exercise of tongue, which resulted the man cast out from the orchid of Eden and they lost the divine presence from their life. So David describes the qualities that one must possess to allowed access to the divine presence in one’s life in psalm 15. One of the quality is to speak honestly or do not backbite. Whose hand will be strong in the Day of Judgment? Which notorious attorney will advocate in that day? Who can upright the one who understand the inner most pulses of our heart?
But the Godly man testifies only what he sees and hear from heaven. Worldly man sees in the world and speaks
World speak the prowling lion. Heaven speak the Daniel’s angle.
World speak storms. Heaven speak Noah’s rainbow.
World speak giants. Heaven speak Canaan.
World speak your faults. Heaven speak your Savior.
World speak your grave. Heaven speak a city whose builder and maker God.
World speak to look in the mirror and see the sinner, a failure, a promise breaker. Heaven speak to look in the mirror and see a robed prodigal bearing the ring of grace on your finger and kiss of your Father on your face.**
So when the Godly man speaks to another;
He testifies the voice of the heaven
He narrates the scene of the heaven
He hears the voice of the heaven
He always looks at the heaven to testify in the earth.
He not speaks from his own!
He witnesses the heaven.
His treasure is in heaven, so he testifies about his treasure.
“The boneless tongue, so small and weak;
Can crush and kill” declares the Greek,
“The tongue destroy a greater horde,”
The Turk asserts “than does the sword”
The Persian proverb wisely saith,
“A lengthy tongue – an early death”
Or sometimes takes this form instead,
“Do not let your tongue cut off your head”
“The tongue can speak a word whose speed,
Say the Chinese “Outstrip the steed.”
The Arab sages said in part,
“The tongue’s great storehouse is heart”
From Hebrew was the maxim sprung,
“Thy feet should slip, but ne’er the tongue”
The scared writer crowns the whole,
‘Who keep the tongue doth keep his soul” +
Let us close our eye for a moment and pray prey like David ‘The man of God’s own heart
O’ Lord, place a guard on my mouth! Protect the opening of my lips. (Ps.141:3)
