Annually on November 1
How good and pleasant it is when brothers live together in unity! It is like precious oil poured on the head, running down on the beard, running down on Aaron's beard, down upon the collar of his robes. It is as if the dew of Hermon were falling on Mount Zion. For there the Lord bestows his blessing, even life forevermore. (Psalms 133:1-3)
How good and pleasant it is when brothers and for that matter, sisters live in unity.
The psalmist here points out a genuine fact, that God bestows blessings where there is unity.
Where there is strife, like in the case of Jacob and Esau, problems keep brewing and there is no peace. Not only unity between brothers and sisters, unity among the members of our family is important for God to bless us. Where there is ill will between the members of a family, God’s blessing upon that family is often hindered.
And how can God bless a church where there is no unity among the brothers and sisters. Of course, it’s possible to create a lot of noise in worship for all and sundry to know that God is among us, but the peace and joy that the Lord gives can never be upon that congregation.
Paul the Apostle writes to Philippians regarding this.
If you have any encouragement from being united with Christ, if any comfort from his love, if any fellowship with the Spirit, if any tenderness and compassion, then make my joy complete by being like-minded, having the same love, being one in spirit and purpose. Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit, but in humility consider others better than yourselves. Each of you should look not only to your own interests, but also to the interests of others. (Philippians 2:1-4)
The Lord will bestow his blessing upon us, if we live in unity, whether it be our families or our churches.
