Blessed is the one who reads the words of this prophecy, and blessed are those who hear it and take to heart what is written in it, because the time is near. (Revelation 1:3)
This is the first of the seven beatitudes (state of blessedness) in the book of Revelation. A significant verse which conveys the message that the matter in the book was meant for all of us and not only for people who lived during John’s time.
Even in the Old Testament days, God was particular that his people, especially the leaders and kings read his laws and live according to it.
Be strong and very courageous. Be careful to obey all the law my servant Moses gave you; do not turn from it to the right or to the left, that you may be successful wherever you go. Do not let this Book of the Law depart from your mouth; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful. (Joshua 1:7,
Regarding kings, God said,
When he takes the throne of his kingdom, he is to write for himself on a scroll a copy of this law, taken from that of the priests, who are Levites. It is to be with him, and he is to read it all the days of his life so that he may learn to revere the LORD his God and follow carefully all the words of this law and these decrees and not consider himself better than his brothers and turn from the law to the right or to the left. Then he and his descendants will reign a long time over his kingdom in Israel. (Deuteronomy 17:18-20)
Many Christians do not venture to read the book of Revelation because many things written in this book are in symbolic form and they find it difficult to understand them.
But the verse here clearly says that the ones who read, the ones who hear and the ones who take it to heart are blessed. The central message of the book is that the final showdown between God and Satan is imminent, Satan will increase his persecution of believers, believers must stand firm in their faith, they are sealed against any spiritual harm and will soon be vindicated when Christ returns, when the wicked are forever destroyed and God’s people enter an eternity of glory and blessedness.
